They were incredibly in-depth as many used actual pen-and-paper RPG systems, and though Elder Scrolls had gotten away from that kind of complexity early on, there was still plenty of mechanics leftover from those days. The other one is an exploration based puzzle game where your goal is to use acquired tools and skills to solve problems and clear obstacles. Sure the Zelda games vary greatly, but all of them have a central theme involving a hero, a quest and some dreaded evil that stands in your way.
